Frost tops Indy Lights practice at Indianapolis

Andretti Autosport’s Danial Frost was quickest in Indy Lights practice on Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s road course, with the whole field split by less than a second.

It started off as a beautiful day as Indy Lights returned to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the first time since 2019. The 13-car field drove the 14-turn road course with no cautions in the 30 laps.

While practice came to a single session, teams and drivers did take part in a pre-event test earlier on Thursday. It marked the first official running at the famous ‘Brickyard’ for the championship since the 2019 Freedom 100.

Drivers opted to stick with their used tyres from the previous round at St. Petersburg, rather than dip into their allocation of new rubber for the weekend, with two ideal qualifying laps required from tomorrow’s session.

Juncos Racing’s Toby Sowery was the early pacesetter in the 45-minute session before Frost came to the fore about 15 minutes in with his fastest time of 1m16.2234s.

As the session continued (and without any interruption), laptimes rarely improved through the field, leaving Frost out front ahead of Sowery by 0.0579 seconds. Sowery completed less than half of the number of laps of anybody else.

The following day, for Race 1, Frost spent most of the race battling with Alex Peroni and teammate Devlin DeFrancesco for a top-five result, after which he recorded his third top-10 finish of the season.

We started P6 for Race 1 and we did our best to maximize the car. It didn’t seem like we had it under control compared to how we did in the test and free practice, so obviously we have to do some work to make the car better for tomorrow. It’s good that we got some solid results for the championship and we still have some work to do to get to the top three for the upcoming races, so we need to make sure our car is there and ready to deliver.

– Danial Frost, #68

Frost currently is at 5th position in the championship with a total of 82 points.

Andretti Autosport’s Indy Lights stable will return to the track tomorrow with qualifying in the morning to set the field for Race 2 at 8:55 a.m. ET. The green flag will fly at 12:45 p.m. for Race 2 with coverage live on Peacock – NBCUniversal’s newest streaming service.

Alternatively, you can tune in to the livestream on IndyLights.com to watch Race 2 as it unfolds.
